Why I’m Running

Most of us were raised to love our neighbors, but somewhere along the way, our politics have forgotten this.

My name is Jared Sluss, and I'm running for State Senate District 7. Because loving your neighbor isn’t a slogan. It’s a responsibility our leaders must reflect in the choices they make and policies they fight for.

I wasn't planning to run — but I couldn't stand the thought of the people I care about having no voice and no real choice in November.

Every year, our neighbors work more to earn less as groceries, rent, healthcare, utilities and childcare costs go up. The people in power seem to be content with talking points and band-aid fixes for wounds that go deep.

Meanwhile, the state of Alabama is choosing to spend our money to build the most expensive prison in American history at $1.2 billion and, by their own admission, it won't even fix overcrowding.

Those are our hard-earned dollars. Imagine what they could do for our kids education, healthcare, or housing?

Those aren’t our values and it's not what Alabama families deserve.

I graduated from UAB with a degree in public health and spent eight years trying to live my values out- working in affordable housing, neighborhood development, and small business ownership. I know what it looks like when a community is left behind — and I know what it looks like when people show up for each other.

You deserve a life you can afford and You deserve politics that reflects what you actually believe.

That's why I'm running.

Common-Sense Priorities

Your tax dollars should work for you — not against you.

Fix Healthcare

Your nurse is underpaid. The insurance company is getting rich. You're getting the bill for both. Let's start fixing it — pricing, denial data, and reimbursables, all in the open. We can't fix what we can't see.

Living You Can Afford

Your bills keep going up. Corporations keep posting record profits. What has Montgomery done to make your life more affordable?

It's time to eliminate the grocery tax, invest in affordable housing, and hold the monopolies profiting off your power bill and your hospital stay accountable.

Fund Pre-K, Not Prisons

Right now, more than half of Alabama's 4-year-olds are on a waitlist for pre-K. At the same time, the state just spent over a billion dollars on a single prison — by their own admission, one that won't even fix overcrowding. For $1.08 billion, we could have guaranteed pre-k was available to all kids for 5 years, not just the lucky ones. That's not a math problem. That's a values problem.
